Chiemgau, the artists' refuge; Lake Chiemsee and its famous islands; these were the Stefula's world. Those in search of Paradise strive in due course to make it themselves. The greenery of their garden, strewn with shells from Spain and alabaster from Volterra, old street lamps and a multitude of other things encases their house by the side of Lake Chiemsee and enabled Dorothea and Gyorgy Stefula to fulfil their desire for harmony and concord. For many years, they lived and painted within the same four walls, with no problems artistically. The "artist couple with children" situation became harder and harder for Dorothea who nonetheless tried to manage everything. As it happens, when the children were small, Mrs Stefula painted enthusiastically for three hours a day. A fragile still life or a nostalgic picture of the grandchildren living in France would very gently emerge from a small board on a table. How did they both manage to maintain this discipline of keeping out of each other's way at work whilst being a couple in town and on the artistic scene? "If we didn't paint, we’d be spiritually impoverished".
